Ted arrived on our shores over 30 years ago.

After graduating from agricultural college in the U.K. Ted heard the sound of a distant, yet distinct drummer and eventually succumbed to the lure. Leaving the comfort and security of the family hearth and arriving only seven days after making immigration application.

Opportunity knocks.

His summer jobs, while at school, were in road building and excavation and upon arrival soon found employment in the same industry. A new found buddy was leaving his job as general manager for an earthmoving company and pushed Ted into taking over his job. (Only in America. No old school tie, here). Ted's task was to find and undertake earthmoving contracts. In short, get these piles of iron moving and keep them moving, profitably. This was no easy task since the industry was aware that the company was broke and being operated on behalf of a financial institution who had taken over the assets. (Keeping millions of dollars of heavy machinery running when suppliers demanded payment with order is not a task for the faint of heart. Or the knowledgeable). Blissfully ignorant he, typically, put shoulder to the wheel and addressed the task at hand. Among the contracts negotiated and successfully undertaken, during this period, were excavations for a significant flood control dam, a new golf course and assorted residential subdivisions.

Make way for daddy. The empire builder

Time moved on, baby girls were arriving with disturbing frequency. Also it seemed that a side enterprise painting lines for parking control was generating more profits than his job. Opportunity, dressed in work clothes, came knocking again and a local school board assigned Ted a contract to paint games lines in the play-grounds of one hundred schools. Goodbye to job.

Having little money and no equipment. It seems the innocent are often protected because soon trucks and machinery were arriving and the part-time business was quickly becoming a much, sought after, supplier to the road building and construction industry.

Ted now had the joy of running a business and bringing up 3 teenaged daughters, alone.

Demand for the expertise of the group was increasing. Awards for highway and airport striping and enquiries from as far away as Ceylon and the Caribbean. A consulting business was developing. Major property owners were asking (And paying for). advice on how to increase the number of cars they could park on their shopping centers. (It seems that at peak shopping times each parking spot pays the center owners more than $2,000, every day).

School had fully instructed baby girls on their "Rights" and the last princess (Baby girl) flew the nest.

Unfortunately The Lord called the eldest baby girl home on April 29 1998.

Winds of change started to blow. He halted his contracting activities, banded together with other individuals and embarked upon a new career of buying the assets of failed financial institutions. Yes folks! You really can buy from Uncle Sam at deep discounts.

The assets being sought were packages of both performing and non-performing mortgages, small loans and automobile loans. Sometimes they would purchase the whole package offered and at other times their participation would be from five to ninety five percent, of the bundle available. (Sometimes half a loaf is better than none. What else can you do if you're low on funds)? This activity led to being lead financier in a small consortium who financed an ocean going ship. (Get him to tell you the story of why the U.S. coast guard shelled the vessel out of the water, It's not as bad as you may be thinking).

The third wave was dawning and constantly having an open ear for opportunity, Ted had a feeling that developments in the new technology of satellites and communications would have an enormous impact across the world. Creating tremendous opportunities, previously undreamed of.

Notice how frequently, machines were used to get the job done?. With the arrival of computers and the immense power now available, for next to nothing. His focus turned to putting these machines to work, too. Using them for administration, sales and teaching functions. His dream of being able to sit under a palm tree and develop business remotely, was becoming a reality. (Virtual office before the term was even heard of).

A few short years ago, this may have been a pie in the sky idea. Now, with the advent of fax voice-mail, e-mail and web audio this idea is now reality for thousands of people, world-wide Folks can now, sit at home, drinking coffee and push a few buttons to grow their business. With auto-responders speeding information around the world for free, the possibilities stagger the imagination. And so easily and cheaply! The third wave is solidly under-way.

Baby girls now have presented Ted with the worlds best grandchildren.

We can fully expect that Ted will marshall the same resources of vision, commitment and focus and always providing outstanding value for money, in order to take full advantage of these exciting new opportunities. A few of us are looking forward to being part of this adventure, too.

My dear mother

Mother had such a profound influence in my early life. Born in the early 1900's she was skilled in both horse and automobile transportation. In addition to her trade as an apprenticed tailoress, she developed a side enterprise to supplement father's wages. Although the family was far from affluent she ensured that her children were well prepared for life by arranging for private tuition not only to strengthen our academic shortcomings but also to provide enough social graces to enable us to function in most circumstances.

Mother's most memorable contribution was to :insist we always pay attention, never say "I know" and always show a willing attitude.

Father.

Although achieving a significant degree of education always had semi-skilled employment. Having only three jobs in his entire working life, he took them almost as seriously as his family obligations. A devoted husband and father who loved not only his own but indeed, all children. Always, a gentle word for all, his home-grown tobacco and roses were legendary. Dad's priceless legacy for us, were his daily examples of reliability, industriousness and quiet sincerity. He left me enormous boots to fill.

Bert the hog farmer.

Bert Hadfield's part-time employment enabled me to increase my miniscule asset base. He ran a fair substantial operation and when there's lots of activity things can and do go wrong. Bert was a philosophical chap, generally easy going and I've never seen him explode even through several outbreaks of swine fever.

His important contribution to my life was his example of keeping cool even when the roof had fallen in and focus one's energies on fixing the crisis. Valuable lessons that, many times, I've had the privilege to reflect upon and use.

Harry and Larry.

Reverend Harry Denning was my first real spiritual leader. A minister of the United Church and has shared so many concepts and precepts that have brought a fascinating and important new dimension not only to my daily walk but also to the challenges of everyday life.

Reverend Larry Rankin. Also a United Church Minister who, in addition to regaling me with stories from his Cuban childhood, showed me that bible class could make an exciting Sunday evening.
